Sick of constant bloating? Change your diet, end the bloat

Feel like you have a lot of gas?  Do you have a  “big” belly sticking out more than usual?  If so, you may have what’s commonly known as “bloating.”  It’s often painful and nobody likes the look.   An estimated 15 – 30% of the general population experiences bloating at one time or another.  It doesn't have to be that way. There is a solution!

Why does bloating happen?

  • Gut sensitivity. Those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can be extremely sensitive to gas, causing pain, cramping and diarrhea, and other conditions associated with bloating.
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Intestinal surgery patients and/or those with IBS are more prone to have SIBO. This condition causes delayed stomach emptying, which can cause bloating, nausea and even bowel blockage.
  • Gynecological conditions. Ovary/uterus problems may cause bloating.  Regular pelvic exams can identify these problems.

Aside from medical treatment, what’s one of the best ways to stop or at least minimize bloating?  Dietary changes can have enormous benefits.  In general, this means avoiding certain gas-producing chemicals, such as:

  • “oligosaccharides” - found in wheat, onions, garlic, legumes and beans
  • “disaccharides” - found in lactose in milk, yogurt and ice cream
  • “onosaccharides” - found in apples and pears
  • “polyols” or sugar alcohols - found in apricots, nectarines, plums and cauliflower

In addition, focusing on a whole foods diet and eliminating heavily processed foods. You might be surprised how simply this change can make a HUGE difference!

Take-away:  Bloating is often painful.   If it persists, it’s important to get expert guidance to identify the cause in order to choose the proper treatment.   I can help you to create a dietary plan which avoids gas-producing ingredients and reducing inflammation to create a healthy gut. Call me for an appointment to discuss your bloating troubles and what we can do to make it better.
